Plant a Tree

We plant a tree for every item sold!

Well, actually you do! And here's how..

Here at Potty Mouth HQ, our goal is to offer fresh, sexy, and interesting houseplants at affordable prices. But, we also think it’s important to take care of the planet while we're at it.

Whilst we aim to work with as many local brands/suppliers to help reduce our carbon footprint, we know that shipping plants from the Netherlands, and then delivering to you guys leaves its mark on the planet. And so to off-set our environmental impact, we plant a tree for every item we sell online and in-store. A positive contribution, while involving you guys in the process. A combined effort of giving back to our planet.

Why a tree you ask? Trees play a key role in our ecosystems, and cutting them has devastating effects. Deforestation not only affects our flora and fauna, but it also affects humans alike. Pollution, species extinctions, floods, desertification, food shortage, poverty and migrations are just some of the problems that deforestation brings along.

That's why we've partnered up with Tree-Nation to support their forestry efforts. They currently have 255 planting projects in 33 different countries. To which we are supporting 'Project Eden' in Madagascar, and the 'Usambara Biodiversity Conservation' project in Tanzania.

Nearly 50% of the world's forests have been cut down - a pretty scary figure, right? In Madagascar, 80% of their original forests have been lost due to deforestation, and Tanzania has one of the highest levels of deforestation in East Africa. In a nutshell, deprived of tree’s to protect their soil, reduce run-off and purify the air and water, this leads to leaving barren lands and poverty-stricken communities.

The Eden project in Madagascar was initiated as it has a high concentration of endemic species (approximately 90% of all plant and animal species found in Madagascar are endemic such as ring-tailed lemurs and the panther chameleon!) and with the extreme deforestation in Madagascar, we are facing devastating loss of habitats and therefore, native species. As forests are restored in Madagascar, disasters like flooding and erosion stop. Soil quality, fisheries, and farming improve, and wildlife returns to their natural habitat.

Similarly, the Usambara Biodiversity Conservation project in Tanzania helps to play a vital role in preserving the high biodiversity in the Eastern Arc Mountains. The soil is suffering from unprecedented ecosystem degradation and the disappearance of endemic species (Tanzania has 1,422 critically endangered and vulnerable species!) Planting trees has the potential to stop the current trend of environmental degradation.

Reforestation of land where trees have been cut down helps to maintain topsoil and prevent erosion, help conserve the local water source and mitigate the effects of climate change. But also to maintain and extend the habitat of the rainforest to preserve biodiversity. Not to forget it is creating jobs within local communities!

This is why we chose to plant trees with Tree-Nation.

So far, to date, we've planted over 10,000 trees!

How it works

So you've made a purchase or are thinking of making a purchase online, fabulous, we love you already! After you've placed your order you will first receive a confirmation email from us about your order, with a receipt of your purchase. You will also receive a separate email with the title 'Potty Mouth offered you a tree on Tree-Nation.'

For every item purchased on our website and in-store, we will plant 1 tree (example: 3 plants and 1 pot = 4 trees). If you do not see it in your inbox, please check your spam inbox.

The email will contain a link that will take you to our Tree Nation page, where you can plant your tree(s) in just 1 click!
